Terhi Mertanen is playing in the European Champions Cup for Finland's Espoo Blue. Here is her report from the first game on Friday vs Moscow Tornado.
I think we were considered as an underdog against Tornado before the game, so I'm very proud of my team how we played against them. Tornado is a professional team and many players in their team were in the Olympics playing for Russia or Slovakia. Players in our team are all amateur. We had 4 players in the Finnish National team (me, Emma Laaksonen, Marjo Voutilainen and Anna Vanhatalo).
Tornado were game strong in the first period. They skated fast and our goalie (Anna Vanhatalo) kept us in the game with some really nice saves. After the rush in the beginning we got the hang of the game too. The game had quite many penalties which naturally effected the events. Russians were good in power play. We had our best play in the third period as Tornado lead the game 4-1, we didn't give up, but kept on fighting and scored twice and tightened the game. The game ended just a bit too early for us, as we didn't manage to take the game to an over time. My highlight of the game was naturally the third goal of the game, I shot from the blue line and my team mate (Oona Parviainen) hit the puck before the goal line. I think I had couple other chances to score in the game so I was naturally disappointed after the game for that.
We have our second game today against the organizing team Berlin. Now it's up to us to do our best in the two other games. As the championship is played as a tournament (no final game or bronze game), every game and goal counts.
I don't know how the tournament has been promoted. The arena is somewhat big, perhaps couple thousand spectators fits in. Yesterday in our game, there was approximately 500 people, but most of them were German soldiers. They were all dressed in green military outfits which was quite interesting. The crows was very loud, they had drums and songs to create a good atmosphere in the arena.
